Chapter 19
Darcy groaned as he awoke to his butler nudging him in his study and lifted up his head from the desk where he had placed it down to rest for a moment but had fallen asleep. He had been up all night to go through the stacks of papers that his cousin had left behind and it had been after sunrise when he had closed his eyes. Checking the time to see that he would be late to church services if he did not hurry, he rushed to his rooms to prepare for the day to appear presentable. He was to meet with Lord and Lady Matlock at St. Paulâs and knew that many eyes would be on him since this was the beginning of the Season and he had been rumoured to be searching for a wife this year. He was relieved that Georgiana was in Matlock with the viscount and viscountess and that she was shielded from the chaos of town gossips.
He took a deep breath before exiting his carriage in front of the church and sat in his seat in his familyâs usual pew to be gawked at and whispered about. He searched for Bingley who had arrived in London last evening, but was unable to locate him from amongst the large crowd and he focused on the sermon which was about Jesus and the resurrection, and that although the Son of God had to depart our world, that He had left able-bodied disciples to carry on the mission until the Second Coming. Darcy thought of Richardâs mission and how their work had been incomplete and was curious if his cousin would ever finish it, as all traces of the treasure had vanished and might be gone for years or decades, if not forever. But one thing was for certain: Elizabeth was in the thick of it all and Darcy had been able to make a connection, of which no one else was yet aware.
After the service, Darcy found Bingley, his sisters, and Mr. Hurst in all of their fineries, with the two ladies fawning over several nobles with false praises and insincere smiles on their faces. âBingley, I am glad you sent me a note of your arrival,â Darcy began. âI must speak with you. I need to talk to you alone as soon as pos...â he could not go on when Miss Bingley hurried to his side and wrapped her arm around his.
âOh, Mr. Darcy! How fine you look today and I am most delighted to see you again after all these months.â She fluttered her eyelashes, âI hope you have missed us as much as we have missed you. It has been dreadful to be in town without your companionship as well as my brotherâs but he has finally returned from his travels and we shall be able to attend merry parties and dinners together again.â
Darcy scowled at the rude woman and firmly pulled her hand off of his arm, âYour brother needed
